Ouderschap als een kunstenaar | Parenthood as an Artist

NL Bij NICC vinden we het belangrijk om aandacht te besteden aan de verschillende situaties en uitdagingen waar hedendaagse beeldende kunstenaars mee te maken krijgen.

Het ouderschap als beeldend kunstenaar is zo’n uitdaging, om deze reden hebben we de NICC Talk: Ouderschap / Parenthood georganiseerd op 02.06.2023. Hieruit zijn verschillende plannen voor de toekomst voortgevloeid, we werken onder andere aan een modeldocument dat als basis zal dienen voor onderhandelingen met instituten. Uit de NICC Talk: Ouderschap / Parenthood is de oprichting van een Whatsappgroep: Parenthood as an Artist ontstaan waarin kunstenaars die ouders zijn elkaar kunnen ondersteunen, informatie delen en vragen stellen.

Intro

Talrijke initiatieven wijzen op het belang daarvan om kunstensector meer kind- en oudervriendelijk te maken: ‘How Not To Exclude Artist Parents: Some Guidelines for Institutions and Residencies’ van Hettie Judah, Reproduction Project (France), Cultural Reproducers (VS), Sustainable Arts Foundation (VS), …

Met dit bericht willen we focus leggen op kunstenaarsresidenties en een aantal adviezen formuleren voor de meer inclusieve organisatie van creatieve broeiplaatsen.

COMMUNICATIE
1. Wees expliciet in het verwelkomen van kunstenaars met kinderen. Benoem jezelf als een familievriendelijke plek en laat weten dat jullie openstaan om de noden van de kunstenaar (in de mate van het mogelijke) op te vangen.
2. Nazorg: vraag achteraf hoe het geweest is voor de ouders die bij jou gewerkt hebben. Luister naar de plaatsen waarin jouw plek tekort kwam en probeer oplossingen te voorzien.
3. Vraag aan alumni of ze openstaan voor een gesprek met nieuwe residenten over wat er al dan niet mogelijk is op jouw locatie.
4. Vraag een kunstenaar/ouder om deel uit te maken van jouw raad van bestuur.
5. Voorzie een FAQ rond ouderschap/kinderopvang op jullie website. Wees ook expliciet in wat er niet kan op jullie plek.
FACILITEITEN
1. Maak het een vanzelfsprekendheid om de gezinssituatie van de kunstenaar aan het begin van een project in kaart te brengen, en zorg voor passende oplossingen en faciliteiten om hen te ondersteunen in hun verantwoordelijkheden als ouder(s).
2. Werk aan inclusiviteitsbeleid. Hoe kan je een systeem voor kinderopvang implementeren in jouw residentieplek? Enkele voorbeelden:
  1. Een rotatiesysteem van kunstenaars die in residentie zijn
  2. Een dagopvang
  3. Creatieve ateliers voor kinderen
  4. Een overeenkomst met een lokale crèche of school, of vaste babysitters
  5. Een kamer voor een andere ouder, een grootouder of een vriend die kan helpen…
  6. Let hierbij op de taalbarrière en de verschillende noden op vlak van leeftijdsgroep.
3. Zorg ervoor dat je plek buggy-toegankelijk is, dat je een kinderbedje hebt, dat je speelgoed voorziet, dat je een kamer hebt om borstvoeding te geven of om te kolven.
4. Ondersteun een manier om vanop afstand deel te nemen aan evenementen, meetings, …
5. Organiseer familievriendelijke publieke evenementen: met een kindvriendelijke manier om met de kunst in interactie te gaan, met kindvriendelijke snacks…
TIJD
1. Houd rekening mee met de organisatie van de tijd van kunstenaars met kinderen. Plan werkuren, gezamenlijke momenten met andere kunstenaars, try-outs en andere speciale evenementen als het de kunstenaars met kinderen uitkomt. Let op! De specifieke uren hangen af van de persoonlijke situatie van de kunstenaar, leeftijd van hun kinderen.
2. Houd rekening mee met de datums van de schoolvakanties. Kan er bijvoorbeeld een periode zijn waarin er opvang wordt voorzien, en alle residenten hun familie kan meebrengen?
3. Onderzoek je mogelijkheden voor flexibele organisatie: kan een langere residentie in meerdere kortere periodes opgesplitst zijn? Kan je een residentie op afstand aanbieden? Is een come-and-go-residentie, waarbij de ouders over en weer naar huis kunnen zoals het voor hen nodig lijkt, een optie?
FINANCIEEL
1. Budgetteer kinderopvang. Ga er op voorhand vanuit dat je kunstenaars kinderopvang zullen nodig hebben, indien je verwacht dat de kunstenaars in de avond of in het weekend aanwezig zijn. Voorzie een budget om dit ofwel zelf te voorzien, ofwel terug te betalen.
2. Budgetteer andere extra kosten: de kunstenaars die ouder zijn reizen met hun kinderen en hun partner, of andere verzorgen, voorzie deze extra reis- en verblijfkosten.
3. Kunstenaars werken vaak in precaire omstandigheden. Hoe vang je als instituut een zwanger persoon op? Overweeg de mogelijkheid om de artist fee uit te betalen via payroll: de kunstenaar bouwt hun sociale rechten mee op (en het is ook vaak voordeliger voor het instituut).
CARRIÈREONDERBREKINGEN
1. Leeftijdsbeperkingen voor kunstenaarsresidenties moeten worden heroverwogen of helemaal worden geschrapt. Kunstenaars die hun carrière hebben onderbroken voor een ouderschapsverlof of onbetaalde zorgtaken, mogen niet worden uitgesloten.

EN At NICC, we think it is important to pay attention to the different situations and challenges faced by contemporary visual artists.

Parenthood as a visual artist is one such challenge, for this reason, we have organised the NICC Talk: Ouderschap / Parenthood organised on 02.06.2023. From this, several plans for the future emerged, we are working on a model document that will serve as a basis for negotiations with institutes. Numerous initiatives point to the importance of making the arts sector more child- and parent-friendly: ‘How Not To Exclude Artist Parents: Some Guidelines for Institutions and Residencies’ by Hettie Judah, Reproduction Project (France), Cultural Reproducers (US), Sustainable Arts Foundation (USA),…

With this message we want to focus on artist residencies and formulate a number of recommendations for the more inclusive organization of creative hotbeds.

COMMUNICATION

Be explicit in welcoming artists with children. Describe yourself as a family-friendly place and let it be known that you are open to meeting the needs of the artist (to the extent possible).
Aftercare: ask afterwards what it was like for the parents who worked for you. Listen to the places where your place was lacking and try to provide solutions.
Ask alumni if they are open to a conversation with new residents about what is or is not possible at your location.
Ask an artist/parent to join your board of directors.
Provide an FAQ about parenting/childcare in your organisation on your website. Also be explicit about what is not possible in your place.

FACILITIES

Make it a matter of course to map out the artist’s family situation at the start of a project, and provide appropriate solutions and facilities to support them in their responsibilities as parents.
Work on inclusivity policies. How can you implement a childcare system in your residency? Some examples:
1. A rotation system of artists in residence
2. A daycare center
3. Creative workshops for children
4. An arrangement with a local daycare or school, or permanent babysitters
5. A room for another parent, a grandparent or a friend who can help…
6. Pay attention to the language barrier and the different needs in terms of age group.
Make sure your place is buggy accessible, that you have a cot, that you provide toys, that you have a room for breastfeeding or pumping.
Support a way to participate remotely in events, meetings, …
Organize family-friendly public events: with a child-friendly way to interact with the art, with child-friendly snacks…

TIME

Take into account the organization of time of the artists with children. Plan working hours, shared moments with other artists, try-outs and other special events when it suits the artists-parents. NB! The specific hours depend on the personal situation of the artist and the age of their children.
Please take the dates of the school holidays into account. For example, can there be a period in which shelter is provided and all residents can bring their families?
Investigate your options for flexible organization: can a longer residency be split into several shorter periods? Can you offer a remote residency? Is a come-and-go residence, where parents can return home as they see fit, an option?

FINANCIAL

Budget childcare. Assume in advance that your artists will need childcare if you expect the artists to be present in the evenings or on weekends. Provide a budget to either provide this yourself or pay it back.
Budget other extra costs: artists who are older travel with their children and their partner, or have other caregivers, plan for these extra travel and accommodation costs.
Artists often work in precarious conditions. How do you, as an institution, accommodate a pregnant person? Consider the option of paying the artist fee via payroll: the artist helps build up their social rights (and it is often more beneficial for the institute).

CAREER BREAKS

Age restrictions for artist residencies should be reconsidered or scrapped altogether. Artists who have interrupted their career for parental leave or unpaid care responsibilities should not be excluded.
