Philippe Vandenberg
Opening on 8 February 2019, 19:30-22:30
NICC is pleased to present Vitrine: Philippe Vandenberg in its display window not far from Brussels South railway station. The work of the eminent Belgian painter and draftsman Philippe Vandenberg (1952-2009) is characterised by an inner quest that balances on various literary, philosophical and art-historical references. Using images, words and symbols, he challenged the ethical context of the artwork and crucially transformed universal themes such as war, religion, movement, sexuality and death.
For the opening on 8 February, the film A Painter Is as Oedipus on the Road (2004) by Julien Vandevelde will be screened, providing an intimate portrait of the artist working and reflecting in his studio. The screening is followed by a talk by Prof. Dr. Marek Wieczorek (University of Washington), who recently contributed to the catalogue of the exhibition Philippe Vandenberg: Kamikaze in the Hamburger Kunsthalle.
