‘THE ANNOTATED READER’ is een tentoonstelling-als-publicatie-als-tentoonstelling. Ryan Gander verzocht samen met criticus Jonathan P. Watts honderden creatieve vrienden en persoonlijkheden om bij te dragen aan een project, dat een verzameling wil worden van hun persoonlijk geannoteerde teksten die essentieel blijken te zijn voor hun inspiratie, carrière of gewoon voor hun gemoedsrust. 281 bijdragen werden verzameld en worden nu ontsloten.

De indrukwekkende lijst bevat o.a. Marina Abramović, Art & Language, Antony Gormley, Olafur Eliasson, Ragnar Kjartansson, Sarah Lucas, Alistair Hudson, Tony Chambers, Hans Ulrich Obrist en nog vele anderen.

De persoonlijke aantekeningen voegen een extra laag toe aan hun teksten waardoor elk stuk uniek is en een historisch verslag vormt van onze huidige tijden. Het tentoonstellingsproject is vormgegeven als een gedrukte A4 handout-publicatie van 281 pagina’s. Bij de presentatie van het boek op leestafels in de tentoonstellingsruimte hangen ook al de A4 geprinte hand-outs met ringbanden aan de muur. Ze zijn tijdens de tentoonstelling door het publiek vrij mee te nemen. Inbegrepen in de tentoonstelling is een verkoopautomaat waar je de gehele gedigitaliseerde publicatie op USB-stick kan kopen voor vijf euro. Daarnaast tonen we ‘The artist is not for turning – Relic Gestures 2017’, een audiovisueel werk van Ryan Gander dat aanleiding gaf tot The Annotated Reader

De tentoonstelling is gecureerd door Marcel Crabeels.

“THE ANNOTATED READER” is an exhibition-as-publication-as-exhibition. Ryan Gander in collaboration with critic Jonathan P. Watts where querying hundreds creative friends and personalities to contribute to a project, which wants to become a collection of their personally annotated texts that prove to be essential for their inspiration, career of just for their peace of mind. 281 contributions were collected and are now made available.

The list includes, among others, Marina Abramović, Art & Language, Antony Gormley, Olafur Eliasson, Ragnar Kjartansson, Sarah Lucas, Alistair Hudson, Tony Chambers, Hans Ulrich Obrist and many others.

The personal notes add an extra layer to the texts, making each piece unique and a historical record of our current times. The exhibition project is designed as a printed A4 handout publication of 281 pages. The book is presented on reading tables in the exhibition space, the A4 printed handouts hang on the wall with ring binders. They can be taken freely by the public during the exhibition. Included in the exhibition is a vending machine where you can purchase the entire digitized publication on a USB stick. In addition, we show “The artist is not for turning – Relic Gestures 2017”, an audiovisual work by Ryan Gander that gave rise to The Annotated Reader
