Go and become the incense burner in the old shrine

Opening vitrine + Reading on Friday 07.04.17 20h!

Vitrine on view from 07.04 till 01.06.17

NICC cordially invites you to the opening of Swiss artist Mai-Thu Perret, who created a new installation for the vitrine space. On the occasion of the opening, she will be reading from her own work as well as excerpts from the writings of others.

Since 1999, Perret has been working on a project titled The Crystal Frontier, telling the story of a group of women who, disillusioned by capitalist, patriarchal society, decided to found an autonomous community named New Ponderosa in the desert of New Mexico. Perret’s long-term art project comprises both texts and objects, examining the rules that inform this collective form-of-life. Her fiction equally seeps into the exhibition space, where bodies of “hypothetically produced” work are being shown, including ceramic and papier-maché sculptures, neon lights, paintings, flags and carpets alongside text fragments (diary entries, letters, lyrics,…). Throughout the years, Perret has developed an intertextual and multi-disciplinary slant on feminist politics, utopian thought and the nature of work.

Mai-Thu Perret (° 1976) is a French-Swiss artist who lives and works in Geneva. She studied at Cambridge University and the Whitney Independent Study Program. Her work has been shown at the 54th Venice Biennale (IT), Nasher Sculpture Center (Dallas, TX), Le Magasin (Grenoble, FR) and MAMCO (Geneva, CH) among many other places.
