The subject of this talk is motivated by the artistic practice-based PhD-research “An Echo of the Sun” conducted by Pepa Ivanova at LUCA, School of Arts, and KU Leuven in collaboration with the Royal Observatory of Belgium (2019-2023).

While current research in artscience focuses on AI, bio media, and human-caused environmental changes, this talk discusses the sun-earth cohabitation. The research focuses on the physical processes of the sun captured by solar and earth observations which become creative mediums in the conception of the artworks dedicated to the interaction of the two cosmic bodies. In the contextualization of this research, Ivanova examines the holistic sun-earth dynamics from the perspective of more-than-human theories. According to these, all biotic and abiotic factors on the earth share equal importance and expand in an ecosystem with the cosmos.

Bridging Alexander Chizhevsky’s holistic interaction of cosmic bodies with Luciana Parisi’s autopoietic in algorithmic architecture in a dialogue between scientists and artists we look at the sun-earth intra-connection found in frequencies and pulsating in planetary processes. The artworks resulting from the research encompass various methods and media; from fictional solar data drawings translated by scientists, and mixed media installation touching on the solar surface; to interface composing the incoming solar events into soundscapes and an installation summarizing the entirety of the visual light on the earth.

“sunEARTH / sunearth cohabitate / the solar pulsations echoing in the Earth’s biosphere”

Het onderwerp van deze lezing is ingegeven door het op de artistieke praktijk gebaseerde doctoraatsonderzoek “An Echo of the Sun” dat Pepa Ivanova uitvoert aan LUCA, Hogeschool voor de Kunsten, en KU Leuven in samenwerking met de Koninklijke Sterrenwacht van België (2019-2023).

Terwijl het huidige onderzoek in de kunstwetenschappen zich richt op AI, bio-media en door de mens veroorzaakte veranderingen in het milieu, gaat deze lezing over het samenleven van zon en aarde. Het onderzoek richt zich op de fysieke processen van de zon die worden vastgelegd door zonne- en aardobservaties en die creatieve media worden in de conceptie van kunstwerken gewijd aan de interactie tussen de twee kosmische lichamen. In de context van dit onderzoek onderzoekt Ivanova de holistische zon-aarde dynamiek vanuit het perspectief van meer dan menselijke theorieën. Volgens deze theorieën zijn alle biotische en abiotische factoren op aarde even belangrijk en breiden ze zich in een ecosysteem uit met de kosmos.

Door Alexander Chizhevsky’s holistische interactie van kosmische lichamen te combineren met Luciana Parisi’s autopoietische in algoritmische architectuur, in een dialoog tussen wetenschappers en kunstenaars, kijken we naar de onderlinge verbinding tussen zon en aarde die gevonden wordt in frequenties en pulserende planetaire processen. De kunstwerken die voortkomen uit het onderzoek omvatten verschillende methoden en media; van fictieve zonne-datatekeningen vertaald door wetenschappers, en gemengde media-installaties die het zonneoppervlak raken; tot interfaces die de inkomende zonnegebeurtenissen componeren in soundscapes en een installatie die het gehele visuele licht op de aarde samenvat.
