Based on the reenactment of this historical fragment, one of the first and only targeted studies (neurological, social, intra-family, etc.) on the effect of tickles in society, the artist develops a unique way of celebrating history. For this, several guests and a theatrical device have been imagined as a visual extension of the study conducted by the two American psychologists. The evolutionary and experimental part of the work is carried out in situ with the participation of the public.

Claudia Radulescu (1972), lives and works in Brussels, she is graduated from St Luc Tournai /BE and L’ERG Brussels. For her the facility towards the chosen medium and the focus on “us” as instinctive and wishful beings, becomes a study compellingly stated through various artistic forms. The permanent invitation addressed to the spectator, to position himself in the role of the observer and index of the artwork, makes each of us become the explorer of our own imagination in a social world. The real or imaginary movement wherewith the work is recomposed, regarding the personal references and relations of the observer, is for Claudia Radulescu just a game between the individual, the artwork and the society.

This event is organized within the framework of FRONT ROW, a new series of thought-provoking artist talks that M HKA and NICC jointly organize monthly. FRONT ROW provides some of the most thought-provoking artists of today with the opportunity to reflect on art, culture, and society alongside the audience. The lectures are a chance for everyone to meet artists and consider and discuss their perspectives on the world.

FRONT ROW is a co-production of M HKA and the artists’ platform NICC, driven by the shared mission to support artists, nurture international ambitions, and facilitate conversations. The open format of the series, from a lecture on a performance to sharing new ideas, underscores the diversity and complexity of contemporary artistic practice.

Claudia Radulescu presenteert de nieuwste missie van Hypergargalesthesia met Moli del Tro (BE), performance en film in Mexico, maart 2024. In samenwerking met Julien Devaux (BE/MX) en La Ruta de la Amistad (MX).

Hypergargalesthesia is een interactief, rondreizend, evolutionair en veelzijdig werk geïnspireerd op “The Psychology of Tickling, Laughter, and the Comic” gepubliceerd in 1897 in The American Journal of Psychology (9: 1–42) door Amerikaanse psychologen G. Stanley Hall en Arthur Allin, waarbij hypergargalesthesia extreme gevoeligheid voor kietelen aanduidt.

Gebaseerd op de heropvoering van dit historische fragment, een van de eerste en enige gerichte studies (neurologisch, sociaal, intra-familiaal, enz.) over het effect van kietelen in de samenleving, ontwikkelt de kunstenaar een unieke manier om de geschiedenis te vieren. Hiervoor zijn verschillende gasten en een theatraal apparaat bedacht als visuele verlenging van de studie uitgevoerd door de twee Amerikaanse psychologen. Het evolutionaire en experimentele deel van het werk wordt ter plaatse uitgevoerd met de deelname van het publiek.

Haar onderwerp omvat de bekwaamheid met het gekozen medium en de nadruk op ‘ons’ als instinctieve en wenselijke wezens, terwijl de studie hiernaar wordt uitgedrukt door middel van verschillende artistieke vormen. De permanente uitnodiging aan de toeschouwer om zichzelf in de rol van waarnemer en index van het kunstwerk te positioneren, maakt van elk van ons de ontdekker van onze eigen verbeelding in een sociale wereld. De werkelijke of denkbeeldige beweging waarmee het werk wordt herschapen, met betrekking tot de persoonlijke referenties en relaties van de waarnemer, is voor Claudia Radulescu slechts een spel tussen het individu, het kunstwerk en de samenleving.
