An exhibition by NICC with works by Belgian self-taught artists
How does one become a visual artist? Those who opted for artistic education, might be tempted to consider it a prerequisite. Although works have certainly been produced before, it’s only after graduation that one is deemed mature enough for the art market. Let the career begin…
But how about artists who didn’t enjoy any training at all? How does an autodidact give shape to the very dawn of artistry? How does one embark on an oeuvre or career without any artistic education whatsoever? Does one get to be a self-taught artist through the production of ‘work’? And if so, how does this ‘work’ come into being? Or does it rather depend on a gift? And how does one grow conscious of one’s own talent?
