Exhibitions will take shape on a two-monthly basis, in a 24/7 display window not far from Brussels South railway station. In addition to that, NICC will be hosting two monthly artist talks by leading figures in its new office space, and organise different interventions in the city. Other activities will take place in autumn of this year, in both Antwerp and Luik.

 

The opening weekend of the new space will coincide with the Brussels Art Days (6 – 8 September), creating an interesting dynamic with the city gallery programme. The first artists to be shown in Brussels are Pierre Bismuth, on a vacant parking lot near WIELS (on Fri. 6th), and Aline Bouvy in the new NICC-project space in the Rue Lambert Crickx (on Sat. 7th). On Sat 7th at 6pm NICC will also host a conversation between Danh Vo and Tim Rollins.

 

Pierre Bismuth (1963, FR) is an artist living between Brussels and New York. Pierre Bismuth’s work explores the multiple manifestations and products of knowledge and culture. His works are metaphors of the ever expanding human activity, challenging any logic of efficiency and usefulness. His work has been shown at Team Gallery (New York), Jan Mot (Brussels), Mary Boone Gallery (New York), Cosmic Galerie (Paris), Gallery Erna Hacey (Brussels), the Villa Arson (Nice) and Lisson Gallery (London). In 2005 he won the best original screenplay at the 77th Academy Awards along with Michel Gondry and Charlie Kaufman for the movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Project in collaboration with Art in the Parking Space, an initiative by artists Warren Neidich and Elena Bajo, together with L.A.-based LA.

 

 

Aline Bouvy (1974,LU) is interested in the fear of dirt – on one hand, as an instrument that reinforces the dominant culture and the power of its rulers, on the other hand, the fear of dirt as the expression of the separation between those adhering to a culture’s moral and ethical code from those who do not conform. In the NICC’s vitrine, Bouvy is presenting ‘It tastes like shit, it is shit, want a toothbrush’, a new installation that narrates the body as a leaking abstraction. Aline Bouvy is an artist living and working in Brussels. Together with artist John Gillis (1972, BE) she has shown her work as an artist-duo in venues such as International Project Space, Birmingham ; International Anthony Burgess Foundation, Manchester ; Kunstmuseum, Bonn ; WIELS, Brussel ; Casino Luxembourg, Luxemburg ; Le Temple, Paris.

 

Danh Vo (born 1975) is an internationally exhibited Vietnamese born Danish performance art inspired conceptual artist. He is the winner of the 2012 Hugo Boss Pr His work has been exhibited at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis; the Art Institute of Chicago, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York; and the Musée d’art moderne de la Ville de Paris, Kunsthaus Bregenz, Austria, among other institutions.

 

Tim Rollins (1955,USA) studied fine art at the University of Maine. After graduate studies in art education and philosophy at New York University, Rollins began teaching art for middle school students in a  South Bronx public school. In 1984, he launched the “Art and Knowledge Workshop” in the Bronx together with a group of at-risk students who called themselves K.O.S. (Kids of Survival). Tim Rollins & K.O.S. have produced allegorical paintings, sculptures and drawings by mining the vast wealth of printed matter  which are themselves understood as political allegories. For their second exhibition at the Xavier Hufkens gallery, Tim Rollins and K.O.S. focus on eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Europe.

 

The artist talk with Danh Vo and Tim Rollins is organised in collaboration with Gallery Xavier Hufkens.
